Animal Research

All animal research, teaching and training at the University of Iowa is under the direction of the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC). The IACUC must review and approve all University activities related to the care and use of animals prior to initiation of animal procedures. The Committee is composed of scientists, non-scientists, veterinarians, and community members.

The Office of Animal Resources (OAR) provides administration, animal husbandry and veterinary care for all animals at the University of Iowa. The animal vivarium accommodates multiple species, including barrier-maintained mice. The OAR program and facilities are accredited by the AAALAC (Association for the Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care, International), registered with the USDA, and maintain a Public Health Services Animal Welfare Assurance.
