About the Initiative
Humanities Without Walls is a consortium of humanities centers at 15 universities. The Mellon Foundation has generously awarded the consortium $3,000,000 to support collaborative, innovative research. One major HWW objective is to create research teams from two or more institutions to position the Midwest as a key site—now and in the past—in shaping global economies and cultures. These faculty teams will have two opportunities to compete for funding. The due dates are October 15, 2014 and 2015. $750,000 will be available for each application cycle. In both competitions, the funds will be divided among several successful teams. The Global Midwest projects will be undertaken between January 2015-May 2016 for the first cycle and January 2016-August 2016 for the second cycle.

The Obermann Center for Advanced Studies (OCAS) is offering several seed grants of up to $10,000 to University of Iowa tenured faculty members to prepare grant applications for the Global Midwest initiative. The due date is March 14, 2014 for work to be accomplished in summer 2014.
