Welcome to the Clinical Trials Office

The Clinical Trials Office was established in July 1998 to facilitate and increase industry-sponsored clinical trials at The University of Iowa. We process studies which are supported by a corporation and which involve evaluation of a technology or product. These studies include preclinical studies and Phase I-IV human studies. We are committed to serving our tripartite client base — the public, researchers, and industry.

For patients and members of the public, we offer a database of open trials. You may search by medical condition to see if there is a research study in which you might wish to participate. In addition, people without a known medical condition are sometimes needed in studies.

For clinical investigators and research coordinators at the University, we offer information about research contracts, how to prepare budgets and how to complete University forms. We also have information to help you get started with a clinical trial. We work with investigators at any college at the University of Iowa to set up industry-sponsored trials.

Companies who have investigational drugs or devices and who are seeking investigators will find a wealth of information about the University, our large health care system and diverse patient population, our health sciences colleges, departments, and academic researchers. Our standard research contract is available online, as well as our guidelines concerning contract issues. Companies can contact us for help in identifying appropriate investigators for their protocols.

The functions of the Clinical Trials Office include the following:

  • negotiate acceptable terms and conditions of clinical trials contracts
  • develop and implement marketing programs to increase clinical trials at the University
  • serve as a resource for faculty and staff concerning the clinical trials process
  • inform faculty of clinical trials opportunities
  • coordinate activities with the Human Subjects Office for expedient review of protocols and agreements
  • set up meetings between corporate visitors and our investigators
