The International Committee of Medical Journal Editors
(ICMJE) now requires, as a condition of consideration for publication,
registration in a public trials registry. Registration must occur
prior to initiating the research to meet the standards set by the
ICMJE. Failure to register will make the results of the trial ineligible
for publication in the journals represented by the association. ICMJE
member publications include the New England Journal of Medicine, the
Journal of the American Medical Association and the Lancet. An
editorial signed by several editors of these journals appeared
in the New England Journal of Medicine.
Registration requirements for new clinical trials began on July 1,
2005. For trials that began enrollment prior to that date, the ICMJE
member journals required registration by September 13, 2005, before
considering the trial for publication. Though it does not specify
where the trials must be registered, the association created certain
criteria for registries. Currently, only the National Library of Medicine's
www.clinicaltrials.gov
meets those requirements although the editorial states there may be
others, now or in the future that would be satisfactory. |
