WINS: Winning Institutional Nomination System

National Institutes of Health

NIH: Bridges to the Doctorate (R25)

Program Summary

The purpose of this funding opportunity is to increase the number of students from groups underrepresented in the biomedical and behavioral research enterprise of the nation and/or populations disproportionately affected by health disparities (hereafter referred to as targeted groups/populations) who successfully complete the Ph.D. degree in biomedical and behavioral sciences. This initiative promotes inter-institutional partnerships between institutions granting a terminal master’s degree and institutions that offer Ph.D. degrees to develop well-integrated developmental activities that will increase students’ preparation and skills as they advance academically in the pursuit and successful completion of the Ph.D. degree in biomedical and behavioral sciences.

Eligibility

Each proposed Bridges to the Doctorate program must consist of a partnership/consortium composed of no more than three institutions, including the applicant institution. One must be an institution that offers the master’s degree as the only graduate degree in the biomedical/behavioral sciences within the participating departments. Another institution must be a college or university offering the Ph.D. degree in biomedical/behavioral sciences. An applicant/partner institution may participate in only one Bridges to the Doctorate partnership.

In the Bridges to the Doctorate grant application only one of the participating institutions may be designated as the APPLICANT institution. The applicant institution is responsible for financial matters in grant management and should be experienced in, and have the infrastructure for, managing NIH grants.  This institution must name the Program Director and submit the application. The other institutions in the consortium must each name one individual as the Program Coordinator.

Institutions that submit applications in response to this FOA may submit separate applications for support of a Bridges to the Baccalaureate Program (PAR-07-411), if they meet the eligibility requirements.

Internal Selection Process

The Office of the Vice President for Research has established an internal review procedure to select the UI nominee.  Applications will be reviewed according to the sponsor's selection criteria.  Considerations will also be given to UI institutional strengths and strategic directions.  Potential applicants must submit, using the preselection link below, the following information:

2.  A description of the proposed project.  It should have the following elements:
  • a cover sheet with the project title, your name, department, and campus address, and the title of the program you are responding to.
  • a description of the proposed project (no more than the sponsor identified limit of 25 pages in length).  Additional pages may be added for references.
  • Please be sure the project is identified on each page and number the pages.
The above materials must be submitted no later than 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, December 1, 2009.  The selected nominee will be asked to complete the full application package in accordance with the sponsor's deadline of Wednesday, January 20, 2010.
