Program Summary
This funding opportunity supports two types of activities: (1) short, advanced level courses that are intended to disseminate new laboratory techniques, methods, analyses related to the mission of the NHGRI and (2) research education and training initiatives that are linked to specific NHGRI research initiatives, such as Centers of Excellence in Genomic Science (CEGS) and large-scale sequencing and database grants.
Eligibility
For courses, applicants may submit more than one course application, provided each application is scientifically distinct. Applicants do not need to apply through the WINS program to submit course applications.
For research education and training initiatives linked to specific NHGRI research initiatives, institutions may submit only one application to encompass all the education and training activities related to all NHGRI grants in that institution. For example, if an institution has more than one NHGRI research initiative grant, such as a training grant and a CEGS, or two CEGS, only one application may be submitted to cover NHGRI’s support of the education and research training at that institution.
For research education and training grant applications that are linked to specific NHGRI grants that require a research education component, the principal investigator of the parent grant initiative and the research education and training initiative must be the same.
Other Special Eligibility Criteria
Participants: Describe who the intended participants are, and the eligibility and/or specific educational background characteristics that are essential for participation in the proposed program.
For research education and training initiatives, NHGRI seeks to improve the diversity of the health-related research workforce by supporting participants from groups that have been shown to be underrepresented in research careers in genomics or ELSI. Such candidates include individuals from underrepresented racial and ethnic groups, individuals with disabilities, and individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds.
Training in Responsible Conduct of Research: Applicants are required to include a plan for Training in the Responsible Conduct of Research (see Section IV.6). This is not required for applications requesting support for courses.
Evaluation and/or Dissemination Plan: Applications must contain an evaluation plan and a dissemination plan. Applications submitted without Evaluation and/or Dissemination sections may be delayed in the review process or not reviewed.
Research education and training applications must have an evaluation plan.
Internal Selection Procedure: The Office of the Vice President for Research has established an internal review procedure to select the UI nominee. Applications will be reviewed according to the sponsor's selection criteria. Considerations will also be given to UI institutional strengths and strategic directions. Potential applicants must submit, using the preselection link below, the following information:
1. A two page CV 2. A description of the proposed research. It should have the following elements: A cover sheet with the project title, your name, department, and campus address, and the title of the program you are responding to. A description (up to but no more than the sponsor-identified limit of 25 pages in length) of the proposed research. Please be sure the project is identified on each page and number the pages.
The above materials must be submitted no later than 5:00 p.m. on Monday, November 23, 2009. The selected nominee will be asked to complete the full application package in accordance with the sponsor's deadline of Monday, January 25, 2010.
