Iowa City, IOWA— Starting this September, the University of Iowa will offer five one-week web development courses and five weekend workshops to the community through the Dev/Iowaprogram. UI Economic Development officials created the Dev/Iowa training program in response to an ever-growing demand for employees with experience in coding and web development.

“In a knowledge-driven economy, technologies are constantly changing, and individuals who do not actively refresh their workplace skills risk losing their competitive position,” says UI Vice President for Research & Economic Development, Dan Reed.

The Dev/Iowa program will enable community members to build upon a basic knowledge of web development, or to brush up on a specific skill or programming language by mixing and matching different course offerings. The week-long format is meant to serve as a complement to the Dev/Iowa Bootcamp, which is a 9-week long, immersive full-stack programming course.

“Similar programs have been launched in Silicon Valley, Dallas, Austin, and New York City. We’re now bringing this IT training to Iowa City. For a fraction of the cost, Iowans can have the same skills training they would get on the coasts without having to leave home. It strengthens our workforce, gives them a better chance at success, and it makes Iowa more competitive,” says Reed.
