As the NNI works very diligently to promote the health and environmental aspects of nanoscience and nanotechnology, we would like to bring attention to efforts that have also been noticed by other news sources.


December 8, 2008 (The University of Iowa News Services) Dr. Aliasger Salem, NNI@UI Executive Committee member, awarded $240,000 grant by the National Cancer Institute Dr. Aliasger Salem, assistant professor of pharmaceutics in the UI College of Pharmacy, and member of the Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center, will use the 2-year grant to optimize vaccines used to treat and prevent solid tumors such as melanoma.

November 11, 2008 (The University of Iowa News Services) NNI@UI Director, Dr. Vicki Grassian, receives award from UI Graduate College Dr. Vicki Grassian, Frank Schmidt and Michael Lovaglia were honored at a reception in November, 2008, for their exemplary work as mentors for graduate students.

November 3, 2008 (The University of Iowa News Services) Dr. Amanda Haes Receives Carver Grant Dr. Amanda Haes, Assistant Professor of Chemistry has received approximately $340,000 from the Roy J. Carver Charitable Trust of Muscatine, Iowa. This grant, given through the UI Foundation, will help researchers use the principles of nanotechnology to develop diagnostic screening tools for potential anti-cancer drugs.

October 13, 2008 (The University of Iowa News Services) Aliasger Salem, NNI@UI Executive Committee Member and Assistant Professor of Pharmaceutics in the University of Iowa College of Pharmacy awarded $717,000 American Cancer Society grant. Aliasger Salem, Ph.D., has received a four-year $717,000 American Cancer Society Research Scholar Award to develop a vaccine to treat and prevent melanoma. Salem will conduct the research in collaboration with George Weiner, M.D., professor of internal medicine in the UI Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine and director of Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center at the UI.
