While it remains unclear whether the federal budget sequestration will take effect on March 1, we must begin planning for that probability. This includes considering the potential impact on existing research grants and contracts, as well as appropriate actions should federal funding be reduced.
It is still unclear what the potential impact will be on existing grants and contracts when final budget agreements are reached. As we await guidance from federal agencies about their implementation plans in the event that sequestration occurs, we encourage you to prepare for the possibility that you will need to operate your research programs with reduced budgetary resources.
This Notice provides guidance about the NIH Fiscal Operations for the remainder of FY 2013 in light of the Consolidated and Further Continuing Appropriations Act, 2013 (P.L. 113-6), signed by President Obama on March 26, 2013, and the sequestration provisions of the Balanced Budget and Emergency Deficit Control Act, as amended, 2 U.S.C. § 901a.
Now that the Congress and the Administration have weighed in, the NCI has learned that our budget for the current year will be approximately $4.78 billion, $293 million less than in FY2012, a reduction of 5.8%.
To the extent that your grants, contracts, or cooperative agreement are affected due to these budget cuts, you will be contacted by the appropriate Officer with additional details.
