Entrepreneur-in-Residence Position Summary
The UIRF is seeking experienced entrepreneurs to support the formation of new companies. The Entrepreneur-in-Residence will spend time each month on The University of Iowa campus in Iowa City, IA to find, evaluate and support the development of new UI spinout companies in collaboration with the UIRF and IOWA Centers for Enterprise.
The structure, logistics, compensation, and responsibilities for this position are flexible and will be tailored to the individual’s experience and current location. Ideally, the primary incentive stems from a strong desire to be part of creating new companies.
Responsibilities
- Work closely with top priorities to drive opportunity, strategies, development, and connect with management, industry, and financing contacts
- Communicate developments and work with internal team to coordinate the allocation of other resources (IP, marketing, contracts)
- Work closely with internal team and external contacts to evaluate opportunities
- Seek new high potential opportunities
- Refer other in-residence candidates and consultants
Targeted Experience
Experience in one or more of the following areas is considered ideal:
- Senior management in an early stage high technology startup
- Management in a company that specializes in spinout companies
- Experience in a seed stage venture capital firm
- Served in a business development role in a high performing university business development organization that successfully formed new ventures
- Served in a business development role, product development role, or other capacities for high technology products or services that enable substantial knowledge of the earliest stages of development for a new technology spinout company
Experience in diagnostics, therapeutics, medical devices, instrumentation, materials science, and software are current priorities, but other backgrounds would be considered.
Candidates must have demonstrated the experience of identifying early stage high technology opportunities, and translated them into businesses, products, services or contracts.
Targeted Qualifications
- MS, MBA, or Ph.D. or an equivalent combination of education and experience in companies related to high technology products and services
- 7 years of experience in developing companies, business models, evaluating and financing companies, technology product development or marketing, or other related areas
- Experience in or aptitude for technology and intellectual property
- Excellent communication and leadership skills
