About Research

Jordan Cohen, Ph. D.
Interim Vice President for Research
Welcome to our web site! The Office of the Vice President for Research (OVPR) oversees an organization that supports and fosters research, scholarship, and creative activity throughout The University of Iowa campus. We consider ourselves to be a service organization with these responsibilities:
- assist faculty, staff, and students in obtaining both external and internal financial support for their projects,
- facilitate working relationships and support for research among various constituents involved in the research mission of the university,
- assist in providing necessary infrastructure and research facilities,
- stimulate and manage the transfer of UI intellectual property to the private sector, and
- ensure that research activities are conducted with the highest ethical standards and in compliance with existing regulations and policies.
Our strategic plan describes our intentions and efforts to meet these responsibilities.
Information about these and other OVPR services is available through the web links that you see at the top left of this and all other OVPR web pages.
Funding Opportunities: Researchers, scholars, and creative artists have at their disposal, through our Division of Sponsored Programs, electronic access to descriptions of external funding sources, application forms, and on-line proposal submission. We also maintain a comprehensive listing of more than 70 Internal UI Funding Sources for research, scholarship, and creative activity. Our Clinical Trials Office facilitates industry-sponsored trials.
Office Directories: Here you will find the names of our OVPR staff, along with phone numbers and other information. Also available there is a link to similar information for the many units that report to this office as well as an organization chart.
Facilities, Centers & Service Units: On this page are links to the several central research support facilities that we oversee. These are units that provide access to important instruments and services that you may require for your work. The page also includes links to a number of OVPR multidisciplinary research units that provide services and contacts in a range of areas, including public policy, state archaeology, biocatalysis, and global/regional environmental research. Finally, this page contains links to each college’s research resources page.
Compliance: In this area, we list each of the areas in which compliance with policy or regulation is a concern for the University and for its researchers and scholars. For each one, details are presented on the policy or regulatory issues, methods for complying with those policies or regulations, and other information.
Intellectual Property/Technology Transfer: The University and each of our researchers or scholars has a major investment in intellectual property, its creations, management, use, and possible transfer into commercial uses. Like the compliance information page, here one can find details on intellectual property law, University of Iowa policy on intellectual property, disclosure responsibilities, and other details, all managed by the University of Iowa Research Foundation. Transfer of technology and intellectual property for the benefit of society and for economic development purposes is also an important office goal. Units involved in the University's interface with the commercial sector include the Office of Corporate Partnerships, (focuses on building corporate alliances relating to long-term strategic projects), the Technology Innovation Center (a business incubator that fosters the development of new business ventures that make use of advanced technology), and the Oakdale Research Park, (offers leased building sites and existing office and laboratory space; provides easy, sustained access to relevant research resources). All three of these units offer faculty, staff, and students unique opportunities to enhance their knowledge and research efforts through interaction with the commercial sector.
News and Announcements: In this area of our web site, we endeavor to maintain a set of very current articles, links, and other content related to emerging news and matters that may be of concern to the research community. Examples include updates on state and federal budget developments, news about changing regulatory environments, and developments related to new funding initiatives or priorities.UI Information: Here one can gain access to a variety of general University of Iowa information resources.
