Iowa Advanced Technology Laboratories (IATL)

The Iowa Advanced Technology Laboratories (IATL) furthers The University of Iowa's tradition of encouraging inter-disciplinary research. Faculty conducting research in the IATL include groups from the Departments of Chemistry and Physics in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences as well as the Departments of Chemical &Biochemical Engineering, Civil & Environmental Engineering, Electrical & Computer Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering in the College of Engineering. The IATL also houses the Center for Global and Regional Environmental Research, the Optical Science and Technology Center, and a portion of the Center for Computer-Aided Design.

The multi-disciplinary 124,439 square-foot IATL building, occupying a site adjoining the Iowa River and directly north of the Iowa Memorial Union, unites five functionally and visually distinct structures. The building was designed by world-renowned California architect Frank O. Gehry who is known for his combinations of opposing forms and diverse materials.
