Harry J. Lloyd Charitable Trust
HJ Lloyd Trust Grants for Melanoma Research
Harry Lloyd (1926–1997) had great passion for helping others achieve their dreams. Through his inspiration, encouragement, and support many received opportunities and attained successes beyond their imagination. Prior to his death caused by melanoma cancer, Mr. Lloyd established The Harry J. Lloyd Charitable Trust with a primary mission to financially support Christian ministries throughout the world and contribute to melanoma research. In 2003, The Harry J. Lloyd Charitable Trust established a melanoma advisory committee to assist the seven trustees in identifying and reviewing melanoma research grant requests. In nine years, the trust has provided 86 melanoma research grants totaling more than $8.5 million.
Not more than one application per institution in each of the three grant type categories will be funded: Career Development, Basic Science, and Translational Research.
Special consideration will be given in two areas: 1) emerging novel concepts that constitute significant innovation and 2) new investigators in the field of melanoma.
Applications will be accepted for a broad range of melanoma research projects involving basic science, clinical trials, etc.
The funding is considered a research grant, and The Harry J. Lloyd Charitable Trust funds cannot be applied to institutional overhead, indirect costs, or other organizational levies.
The following guidelines apply to all grants:
Recipients will use animals in research only when non-animal options are not available and when the use of animals helps answer significant scientific questions. Recipients will make every effort to minimize distress and pain experienced by the animals.
Recipients will not use embryonic or fetal cell culture tissues systems in any research funded by the Lloyd Trust.
The use of transgenic animal models in which human genes are inserted into the germ line requires advanced approval by the trust.
