NIH: Medications Development Centers of Excellence Cooperative Program (U54)

Program Summary

This FOA solicits Specialized Center Cooperative Agreement (U54) applications to provide support for Medications Development Centers of Excellence (MDCE) with emphasis on clinical research directed towards the identification, evaluation, and development of safe and effective medications and biologics for treatment of substance use disorders (SUDs). Research may focus on both currently approved or novel, investigational products. Centers may have a translational component to reinforce rationale of medications for testing.


Only one application per institution is allowed.

Award Information

NIDA intends to fund an estimate of 2 cooperative agreement awards, corresponding to a total of $3 M, for fiscal year 2014. Future year amounts will depend on annual appropriations.  Application budgets are limited to $1M in direct costs. Applicants may apply for up to five years of support.   

Internal Selection Procedure

The Office of the Vice President for Research and the Carver College of Medicine have established an internal review procedure to select the UI nominee. Applications will be reviewed according to the sponsor’s selection criteria. Consideration will also be given to UI institutional strengths and strategic directions. Potential applicants must submit, using the preselection link below, the following information:
1. A two page CV; and
2. A description of the proposed project. It should have the following elements:
The above materials must be submitted no later than 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 20, 2013. The selected nominee will be asked to complete the full application package in accordance with the sponsor's deadline of Thursday, August 15, 2013.
