Rachel Maller chosen as CLAS Commencement Speaker

Rachel Maller, intern in the University of Iowa Public Policy Center’s Social and Education Policy Research Program under director Sarah Bruch, was selected as the speaker for the University of Iowa College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (CLAS) commencement on Saturday, Dec. 16.

The UI Hydraulics Laboratory is shown in 1933. The recent acquisition of a set of journals written by the lab’s founding director help paint a picture of the early days of the University of Iowa’s internationally renowned hydraulics research.

Old Gold: Newly acquired journal documents early days of renowned UI hydraulics lab

From 1921 to 1933, the founding director of the University of Iowa’s IIHR–Hydroscience and Engineering chronicled the institute’s beginnings in his journals, which recently were purchased at auction and donated to the University of Iowa. UI archivist David McCartney discusses the acquisition.

The Office of the Vice President for Research and Economic Development (OVPRED) is accepting applications for spring 2018 Arts & Humanities Initiative (AHI) program. This program encourages leading edge scholarship, creative activities and interdisciplinary research.  The next deadline is Tuesday, March 6, 2018.

Humanities faculty named DSHB Faculty Scholars

The Developmental Studies Hybridoma Bank (DSHB) at the University of Iowa funds awards meant to advance the education of liberal arts students, including aspiring scientists, by helping to defray research-related expenses. It recently named associate professors Amber Brian, Mary Cohen, Marie Kruger, Brenda Longfellow, and Miriam Thaggert DSHB Faculty Scholars.

Pigeons can discriminate both space and time

Pigeons aren’t so bird-brained after all. New research from the University of Iowa shows that pigeons can discriminate the abstract concepts of space and time, likely using a different region of the brain than humans and primates to do so.
