Nominations sought for safety award

Practicing safety in University of Iowa laboratories has never been more pertinent than it is today, in the midst of a global pandemic.

As the university begins to transition back to campus for work, the Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) office is looking for examples of faculty and staff who are putting safety first in innovative ways.

Computer Science researcher Zubair Shafiq part of $10 million NSF cybersecurity grant

The National Science Foundation announced that University of Iowa Computer Science researcher Zubair Shafiq is part of a team receiving a $10 million grant. The grant is part of NSF’s Secure and Trustworthy Cyberspace (SaTC) program, which supports cybersecurity research. Shafiq’s team’s project is titled “ProperData: Protecting Personal Data Flow on the Internet.”

Study finds vaping can lead to poor oral health

A researcher from the University of Iowa College of Dentistry was part of a research team that found vaping significantly increases the likelihood of cavities and other oral health problems caused by excess bacteria in the smoker’s mouth.

Electrical and Computer Engineering professors receive NSF RAPID grant for novel COVID-19 testing technologies

Three Electrical and Computer Engineering faculty members received a National Science Foundation (NSF) RAPID grant titled  “RAPID: High-Throughput and Low-Cost Testing of COVID-19 Viruses and Antibodies through Compressed Sensing and Group Testing,” to develop a novel high-throughput and low-cost testing technology that has great potential of breaking the testing bottleneck of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Three OVPR staff members recognized for excellence

The Iowa Board of Regents and the University of Iowa recognized the professional achievements of Cori Peek-Asa, Wendy Beaver, and Julie Cunningham.

“I am proud to work alongside these professionals, and even prouder of their tremendous contributions to sustaining and expanding the research enterprise at the University of Iowa,” said Marty Scholtz, vice president for research. “Cori, Wendy, and Julie each demonstrate outstanding leadership, and serve as key assets for our organization.”

Website offers research ramp-up guidance

The University of Iowa Office of the Vice President for Research has launched a new Website to help guide researchers, scholars, and creative artists as they begin to return to campus during the COVID-19 outbreak.

NASA-Iowa TRACERS project moves into next phase

A $115 million space mission awarded by NASA to the University of Iowa can now proceed in earnest. Called TRACERS, it will study interactions between the sun’s and Earth’s magnetic fields. NASA also approved an extra $7.6 million for a magnetic field instrument to be designed and built at Iowa.

The University of Iowa Office of the Vice President for Research has launched a new Website to help guide faculty, staff, and student researchers, scholars, and creative artists as they ramp up activities on campus. Click here to access the site. 

This site supersedes the ramp-down Website, though that site will remain live for the time being.
