J. Martin (Marty) Scholtz, Ph.D., is the Vice President for Research at the University of Iowa.
Prior to joining the University of Iowa in June 2019, Scholtz served as the executive associate vice president for research at Texas A&M University, where he held faculty appointments in the Departments of Biochemistry & Biophysics, Molecular & Cellular Medicine, and Medical Biochemistry and Genetics.
His research program has focused on fundamental studies of the folding, stability and solubility of proteins and peptides. This research uses of a battery of biophysical techniques including NMR, differential scanning calorimetry, fluorescence and visible spectroscopy and circular dichroism spectroscopy.
His research activities have been supported by the National Institutes of Health, The American Cancer Society, The American Heart Association, The Robert A. Welch Foundation, Amgen, Inc. and The Advanced Research Program of the State of Texas. He has received multiple awards, including being named an Established Investigator of the American Heart Association, a Junior Faculty Research awardee from the American Cancer Society, a Montague Scholar by the Center for Teaching Excellence at Texas A&M and the recipient of the Teacher/Scholar Award from the University Honors program.
He graduated summa cum laude with a bachelor of science degree in chemistry from the University of Nebraska–Lincoln in 1984, where he did undergraduate research with Professor Sheldon M. Schuster. He earned a doctorate in chemistry from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1989, working in the laboratory of Professor Paul A. Bartlett. After postdoctoral work with Robert L. Baldwin at Stanford University, he joined the faculty of Texas A&M in 1993. He has taught courses in medical biochemistry, biophysics, cell biology and spectroscopy.
