The Iowa Technology Institute is pleased to invite the public to a lecture on Wednesday, June 5 from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. featuring author, consultant, and speaker, Spence Byrum, who will explore technology’s role in health care. Spence is internationally recognized for specializing in implementing High Reliability Organization (HRO) Best Practices from aviation to a myriad of high-risk industries including health care.
Spence will be speaking at the University of Iowa on the benefits of High Reliability Operations, technology’s role in health care, and the impact of Human Factors on the delivery of patient care. The lecture is designed for all levels of personnel in leading-edge health care systems and targets specific things individuals and teams can do or say to enhance outcomes.

About the Speaker
Spence Byrum is an internationally recognized speaker and author who specializes in implementing High Reliability Organization (HRO) Best Practices from aviation to a myriad of high-risk industries including health care. Mr. Byrum is a retired Coast Guard pilot, safety officer, accident investigator, flight instructor/evaluator, glider pilot and airshow demonstration pilot as well as the former Head of Standardization and Training for the Coast Guard Hercules fleet. Mr. Byrum has spoken at over 330 national & international conferences on high reliability, mission effectiveness, risk management, and safety and has worked with many of the largest health care providers, insurers and equipment manufacturers in the U.S., Canada, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom. He has led design, development, and implementation of comprehensive programs for VHA, NASA, NATO, FAA, Customs and Boarder Protection, the National Bio and Agro-Defense Facility, the U.S. Coast Guard and has worked closely with all branches of the U.S. Department of Defense as well as the military forces of the United Kingdom, Italy, Belgium, the Netherlands, Canada, Switzerland, Poland, Australia, and Greece.
