Seeks treatments for rare cancer

Body

“As a driving force in my research program who always finds time to help others, Ellen epitomizes scientific excellence and professionalism. I feel lucky to be Ellen's mentor. She is a delightful person who promises to become a highly successful physician scientist whose work will improve the lives of cancer patients.” – Dawn Quelle

Hometown: Rapid City, South Dakota

Faculty mentor/advisor: Dawn Quelle, PhD, professor of neuroscience and pharmacology, Carver College of Medicine

Degree program and anticipated graduation date: Medical Scientist Training Program (MD/PhD), PhD in cancer biology, Spring 2028

Ellen Voigt studies the proteins and signals that drive cancer growth, focusing on Malignant Peripheral Nerve Sheath Tumor (MPNST), a rare and aggressive cancer with limited treatment options. Her research investigates the role of FOXM1, a tumor-promoting protein, and evaluates newly developed drugs that target it. These drugs have shown promise in other cancers, and Voigt’s work aims to determine whether they could become a viable therapy for MPNST patients.

“Earning a PhD has been an incredibly formative experience for me,” says Voigt. “I have relished the chance to dedicate most of my time to understand the complexity of cancer biology, master new skills, and be creative with the directions my projects take.”

Her research combines innovative molecular techniques with real-world approaches, offering hope for patients with rare cancers and potentially informing treatments for other tumor types. After completing her MD/PhD, Voigt plans to pursue an internal medicine residency and become an oncologist and physician-scientist, continuing her mission to improve cancer care through research.
