Madelynn Kane’s scholarship strengthens the connection between research, education, and family-centered community support for children with hearing loss. Her work focuses on ensuring that educational planning reflects assessed needs while promoting communication access and self-advocacy skills. Kane is a member of the Office of Community Engagement’s Graduate Engagement Corps, and she organizes activities—such as “Pastries with Parents” and seasonal events—to foster collaboration among families, educators, and clinicians.

“Being involved in research has strengthened my ability to analyze data and apply evidence-based practices, while also deepening my engagement with the community,” says Kane. “Working directly with families and community members allows me to create actionable change that improves communication access and support for children with hearing loss.”

After graduation, Kane plans to work in a pediatric hospital setting before opening her own clinic with mobile services to provide audiological and educational support. She also hopes to continue teaching American Sign Language virtually to promote communication access and advocate for the Deaf community.
