“Mia Dukle is a remarkable scholar with great integrity, combining her passion for healthcare and research with a high degree of success. She thinks critically, takes on tough challenges, and has impressive, mature interpersonal skills.” – Hanna Stevens

Hometown: West Des Moines, Iowa

Faculty mentor/advisor: Hanna Stevens, MD/PhD, professor of psychiatry, Carver College of Medicine

Degree program and anticipated graduation date: BS in biomedical sciences, BS in bioinformatics, Spring 2026

Mia Dukle investigates how different models of prenatal stress influence fetal brain development, potentially contributing to neurodevelopmental disorders such as attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and autism. Understanding the effects of stress during pregnancy can highlight the role of the placenta and the mother’s active immune system and better inform early prenatal care. Mia received a 2024-25 fellowship from the Office of Undergraduate Research (OUR) for her work.

“These experiences have been central to my success at the University of Iowa, helping me think critically, manage my time effectively, and approach challenges with curiosity,” says Dukle.

Beyond the lab, she serves as an OUR ambassador and as a Child Life employee and Volunteer Board member within the Stead Family Children’s Hospital. After graduation, Dukle plans to attend medical school, combining clinical care and research to create better outcomes for children and families.
