It’s never too early to start strategizing about how to write a winning grant proposal that will get attention and bring in research funding.

A long-respected program that helps faculty and other research team members do just that, the Write Winning Grant Proposals seminar, will be offered on the University of Iowa campus Oct. 25. The event will be presented by John D. Robertson, Ph.D., a managing member of Grant Writers' Seminars & Workshops, and is sponsored by the Research Development Office (RDO) in the Office of the Vice President for Research, in collaboration with the UI Carver College of Medicine Office of Faculty Affairs and Development.

Seating is limited, and registration is open now through close of business Oct. 4.

The seminar runs from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Hilton Garden Inn, 328 S. Clinton St., Iowa City. Cost is $150, which includes supplemental materials and lunch.

The seminar comprehensively addresses both practical and conceptual aspects of writing competitive grant proposals and is appropriate for faculty members, postdoctoral researchers, and administrative staff who have had some exposure to writing grant applications, either through training and mentoring or personal experience.

Regardless of the agency, participants are taught to write with a linear progression of logic, which leads reviewers through an application without them knowing that they are being led. Also covered are coping strategies to help applicants write for two different audiences in one proposal: the assigned reviewers, who read the application in its entirety, and non-assigned reviewers who may have read little or nothing of the proposal before the meeting of the review panel.

The seminar is in a lecture format with multiple opportunities for questions throughout the day.
