The University of Iowa campus community is invited to attend open forums for finalists for the associate vice president for research positions in the Office of the Vice President for Research (OVPR).
The OVPR plans to fill two part-time positions. One position will support the arts, humanities, and social sciences and one position will work with the biomedical, mathematical, and physical sciences.
The candidates for the associate vice president for research for the arts and humanities are: Gigi Durham, professor of journalism and mass communication and gender, women’s and sexuality studies; Kristy Nabhan-Warren, V.O. and Elizabeth Kahl Figge Chair in Catholic Studies, and professor, religious studies and gender, women’s and sexuality studies; and Rebekah Kowal, department executive officer and professor of dance.
The candidates for the associate vice president for research for biomedical, mathematical, and physical sciences are Aliasger Salem, Lyle and Sharon Bighley Endowed Chair, and professor, pharmaceutical sciences and experimental therapeutics, and Xian Jin Xie, associate dean for research, centennial professor and director, division of biostatistics and computational biology.

The new associate vice presidents for research will recommend new programs to stimulate external funding in all disciplines, assist the Vice President for Research with the development of research initiatives, facilitate interactions between interdisciplinary research teams, and supervise core research facilities and centers that report to the Office of the Vice President for Research.
The search committee is chaired by Donna Hammond and Chris Merrill and includes Allan Guymon, Tammie Walker, Dave Wiemer, Mike Weaver, and Wendy Loney. The positions will start on or around July 1, 2022.
