The Faculty Newsmaker of the Year Award recognizes a University of Iowa faculty member whose research, scholarship, or creative activity has received broad coverage in print, radio, television, or other traditional or social media. The coverage will have brought positive attention not only to the individual faculty member, but also to the University of Iowa, highlighting the university’s excellence in research and scholarship. This award honors a faculty member whose scholarly efforts extend beyond the academy to have a positive and significant impact in the public sphere.
Eligibility
All current University of Iowa faculty members with a 50% or greater appointment are eligible.
Deans, associate deans, and departmental executive officers (DEOs) are preferred nominators. Self-nominations are permitted.
Competitive nominees will demonstrate impact through criteria such as:
Demonstrable dissemination of research in traditional or social media.
Data analytics or other documentation indicating substantial viewership, readership, and impact.
Award categories
One award is presented annually across all categories.
Nomination and selection process
Required documents:
Statement from the nominee: No more than 750 words describing thenominee’s qualifications and accomplishments.
Letter of nomination: A letter describing the nominee’s qualifications and accomplishments.
Nominee's curriculum vitae (CV) or NIH biosketch: No more than 10 pages
Late materials will not be accepted.
Award details
A $1,000 prize and a commemorative gift.
Recognition at the University of Iowa Faculty and Staff Awards Celebration, usually held in May.
