Book
- Amount available: Up to $2,500.
- Expenses supported: Items essential to book publication, such as required press subsidies, permissions, or indexes.
- Eligible projects: Scholarly and creative books. Textbooks and self-published books are not eligible.
Performance and exhibition
- Amount available: Up to $2,500, regardless of the number of faculty involved.
- Expenses supported: Costs and items essential to the performance, such as travel costs, shipping costs, or insurance.
- Eligible projects: Major projects with broad reach, especially those involving audiences, participants, collaborators, or co-production partners outside the University of Iowa.
Eligibility
- The Final Stage Project Fund is open to all full-time tenure-track or tenured University of Iowa faculty. Instructional-track faculty may apply only if research, scholarship, or creative activity is one of their primary job responsibilities. Adjunct faculty, visiting faculty, staff, postdoctoral scholars and fellows, fellowship trainees, undergraduate and graduate students are not eligible.
- Funding should not replace resources that are normally available through a faculty member's department or other contracted research or production support. Awards will not be made when sufficient funds for the proposed expense are already available through these sources.
- Requests must be submitted prior to the final manuscript goes to press or the performance/exhibition.
Timing
- Faculty may apply for the Final Stage Project Fund at any time. Reviews can take up to four weeks.
- The Office of the Vice President for Research annually announces awardees on our website.
How to apply
- A detailed budget outlining anticipated expenses is required for all applications.
- A book contract or publishing agreement is required for a book award.
- An invitation to perform or exhibit is required for a performance and exhibition award.
- If your request is approved, you will receive a letter specifying the effective date and end date for your funds, as well as the MFK. Most funds will be available for the end of the current fiscal year and through the next.
Is cost sharing with my department required?
Cost sharing from the applicant’s department is encouraged.
What information is required for travel costs?
All travel funded by the program must adhere to the UI Travel Policy (Chapter 22).
When submitting the detailed budget, for each individual include their:
- Name
- Role at the university
- Role in the project
- Rationale for inclusion
How often can an author apply for a book Final Stage Project Fund grant?
Faculty can apply for a book Final Stage Project Fund grant once for each book they publish.
How often can a faculty member apply for a performance and exhibition Final Stage Project Fund award?
Each project can receive only one Final Stage Project Fund award.
To distribute limited funds equitably, performance and exhibition Final Stage Project Fund awards are typically limited to one per faculty member each fiscal year. In some circumstances, an additional award may be considered.
Are self-published books eligible for a book Final Stage Project Fund award?
No. Self-published books are not eligible for funding.
Are textbooks eligible for a book Final Stage Project Fund subvention?
No. Textbooks are not eligible for a book Final Stage Project Fund award.
Can Final Stage Project Fund funds be used for a book launch party or other event?
No. Book Final Stage Project Fund awards are only for necessary aspects of book production such as indexing, art clearance fees, and mandatory subsidies required by the press.
Are these awards the same as the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (CLAS) subventions?
Yes. The purpose, funding source, and CLAS participation are the same as the previous CLAS subventions. The updated program has a new name and is now open to all UI faculty.
