Do you know a member of the University of Iowa research community who is making exceptional contributions in their field? The Office of the Vice President for Research is now accepting nominations for the 2024 Discovery and Innovation Awards.
Awarded annually, the awards recognize a range of mission-critical activities of the research enterprise, including conducting superior research and scholarship, engaging with public audiences, mentoring student researchers, and administering research programs. Fourteen major awards are offered for faculty, staff, postdocs, graduate students, and undergraduate students.
Awards are available in the following categories:
Faculty Awards
- Scholar of the Year*
- Early Career Scholar of the Year*
- Leadership in Research*
- Distinguished Achievement in Publicly Engaged Research*
- Distinguished Achievement in Arts and Humanities Research*
- Faculty Communicating Ideas Award*
- OUR Distinguished Mentor Award**
Research Staff Awards
- Distinguished Research Administrator Award*
- Distinguished Research Professional Award*
Safety Awards
- Innovation in Safety Award*
- Innovation in Safety Award (Student)**
Postdoctoral Award
- Postdoctoral Research Scholar/Fellow Excellence Award**
Student Awards
- Excellence in Undergraduate Research Awards**
- Graduate Research Excellence Awards**

For the first time in 2024, nominations will be accepted in two rounds.
The deadline for nominations for the Excellence in Undergraduate Research Awards, Graduate Research Excellence Awards, Postdoctoral Research Scholar/Fellow Excellence Award, and Innovation in Safety Award (Student) is January 11, 2024. The winners of the awards for students and postdocs will be recognized at an event at the Englert on February 28, 2024.
The deadline for the awards recognizing faculty and staff is February 12, 2024. This includes Scholar of the Year, Early Career Scholar of the Year, Leadership in Research, Distinguished Achievement in Publicly Engaged Research, Distinguished Achievement in Arts and Humanities Research, Faculty Communicating Ideas Award, OUR Distinguished Mentor Award, Distinguished Research Administrator Award, Distinguished Research Professional Award, and Innovation in Safety Award (non-student). The winners of the faculty and staff awards will be recognized at a campus-wide ceremony for faculty and staff on April 30, 2024.
The Office of the Vice President for Research, the Office of Finance and Operations, the Graduate College, and the Office of Undergraduate Research sponsor the awards.
