Ryan Jepson, manager of the environmental microbiology laboratory at the State Hygienic Laboratory (SHL), has received a 2026 Regents Staff Excellence Award for making a significant impact on the University of Iowa and the state.
Jepson’s work protected Iowans from infectious disease outbreaks, environmental hazards, and foodborne illness. Over 17 years at SHL, he has built a reputation for technical expertise, collaboration, and service that extends well beyond the laboratory.
He leads efforts to identify potentially dangerous microbes in our environment early, like testing wastewater regularly signs of infectious diseases like RSV or the flu, so public health officials can work to stop the spread of disease. Jepson also manages SHL’s response to outbreaks such as Salmonella and Legionella, working closely with Iowa Health and Human Services and local partners to make time-critical decisions to protect the health of Iowans.
“Ryan has demonstrated consistent dedication to the needs of the citizens of Iowa by performing tests in emergency situations, often during non-working hours, so that health care decisions could be made,” Pentella says.
