The State Hygienic Laboratory at the University of Iowa has again been recognized as the healthiest laboratory in the nation by the Association of Public Health Laboratories (APHL), marking the second time the lab has received this national honor for its environmental stewardship, safety, and employee health and wellness.

First awarded to the State Hygienic Laboratory in 2022, the recognition highlights the lab’s continued commitment to fostering a healthy workplace culture while advancing public health efforts across Iowa and beyond. All three State Hygienic Lab locations — Coralville, Ankeny, and Milford — are included in the award.

“This recognition reflects the dedication of our entire team to creating a workplace that prioritizes safety, well-being, and sustainability,” said Michael Pentella, director of the State Hygienic Laboratory. “We are proud to be recognized again at the national level for our efforts to support our employees while protecting the health of the state and the communities we serve.”

The State Hygienic Laboratory’s success is driven by its comprehensive approach to workplace health, including robust safety training programs, participation in university wellness initiatives, and a facility designed with sustainability and employee well-being in mind. Features such as natural lighting, bike storage, and environmentally friendly practices contribute to a supportive and health-focused environment for staff.

Formal recognition of the award will take place on May 7 at the APHL Annual Conference. The State Hygienic Lab also will receive $1,500 with the award to support health and wellness initiatives for staff. The State Hygienic Lab Council will determine how to use the funds.
