The Scholar of the Year Award is among the University of Iowa’s most prestigious faculty awards for research, scholarship, and creative activity. It celebrates nationally recognized achievement in research, scholarship, or creative activity within the previous 24 months. The award generally recognizes a single, identifiable achievement rather than an accumulation of scholarly work.
Eligibility
All current University of Iowa faculty members with a 50% or greater appointment are eligible.
Deans, associate deans, and department executive officers (DEOs) are preferred nominators. Self-nominations are permitted.
Competitive nominees will demonstrate impact during the past 24 months through criteria such as those listed below:
Recent publication or release of a significant book, manuscript, artistic piece, or other scholarly work with significant impact on scholarship, society, or both.
Recent receipt of a major professional award.
Recent receipt of major external funding.
Award categories
One award is presented annually across all categories.
Nomination and selection process
Required documents:
Letter of nomination: A letter describing the nominee’s accomplishments, including information specific to recent accomplishments fitting the criteria of this award
Nominee's curriculum vitae (CV) or NIH biosketch: No more than 10 pages
Late materials will not be accepted.
Award details
A $3,000 prize and a commemorative gift.
Recognition at the University of Iowa Faculty and Staff Awards Celebration, usually held in May.
